There is not very much difference between counselling and psychotherapy. Generally the word ‘counselling’ is used for short term work where the focus is on problem solving. ‘Psychotherapy’ is more often used where the emphasis is placed on deeper emotional problems and may last a number of years. You may decide to come for counselling about a specific problem and then choose to spend longer looking at a range of issues and gain a deeper understanding of yourself. The most important aspect of counselling is the professional relationship you build up with your counsellor. A good relationship in therapy is one which is non judgemental and respectful and involves the establishment of trust.
