Sports Massage Practitioner Sports massage refers to the discipline of using massage to manipulate, manage and rehabilitate the soft tissues e.g. ligaments, tendons and muscles. Under current law anyone can refer to themselves as a sports massage practitioner or sports therapist. However levels of training and practice vary enormously. If you visit a sports massage practitioner they should be a member of the sports massage association (SMA) and they will have the letter MSMA after their name. As a member of the sports massage association I can identify anyone for whom sports massage would be ill-advised or detrimental to their short or long-term well being. I will assess each individual and provide the appropriate massage techniques, and will advise on alternative action if required.
